The works of Edgar Degas were deeply
influenced by Japanese art, yet surprisingly, there has never been
an exhibition devoted to this subject...until now. Degas and the
Art of Japan at the Reading Public Museum, on display now through
Sunday, December 30, 2007, is the first exhibition of its kind to
bring together a variety of works by Degas with an illuminating
selection of Japanese objects, including a work actually owned by
Degas and many images he knew and admired. Displayed side-by-side
with the art of the famous Impressionist, these dynamic scenes of
Japanese life are revealed as the inspiration for many of Degas'
most inventive pictures of dancers, cabaret singers, laundresses
and the French countryside. |

Matthew White, a New York native who has lived in and documented the unique beauty of Louisiana since 2000, and is a contributor to "Beyond Katrina: The Voice of Hurricane Disaster & Recovery," goes beyond the eastern Gulf Coast to recount the devastation of Hurricane Rita pictorially. White's haunting photographs and personal memoir now featured on www.hurricane-katrina.org are a powerful witness to the 2005 storm, which hit Louisiana's southwest coastline three weeks after Hurricane. The area has even drawn interest from the White House. Former President George H. W. Bush will visit Cameron Parish this Wednesday, Dec. 20 to present $2 million to South Cameron Memorial Hospital, which is rebuilding from Hurricane Rita. |

Jenna Gribbon's preoccupation with urban migration is eloquently played out in her intimate and acutely observed canvases of rooms that depict various states of habitation. A typical fast-paced urbanite may find this superimposing of personal belongings into alien spaces ubiquitous, but Gribbon&rsquos fine-tuned inspection of the displacement of foreign objects into incongruous spaces is awkward, quirky, and somewhat aloof. For Gribbon, the mementos we carry with us are symbols of who we are that we forcibly assimilate into our current living situations. |

Sarah Bowen Gallery opens the fall season with an exhibit of photographs and projections titled “It Takes One to Know One” by Manitowoc, Wisconsin artists John Shimon and Julie Lindemann. As a collaborative team, their work elegantly captures the flavor of the landscape and the quiet, melancholy realities of American rural and small town life. Their highly stylized photographs simultaneously evaluate and elevate their subjects as portraits of obscure Midwestern denizens, unnervingly comfortable with their small town identity, are rendered in inappropriately substantial platinum. |

Yale Reinvents Red Hook, Brooklyn: Architectural Drawings at the BWAC Art Show The Yale School of Architecture has proposed an extreme makeover for Red Hook, Brooklyn. What is even more exciting, this display will be shown in Red Hook itself, as part of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC)’s Summer Art Show, “Food for…A Feast for the Eyes” located in a Civil War era warehouse on the Pier at 499 Van Brunt Street. |
