An Iraqi Native Shares a Fresh Perspective on his Country’s Past and Present

Mr. Muhammad Survives Iraq: Long Road to Freedom, by Taha Muhammad, reveals the truths of the Iraqi nation like no other book. Taha Muhammad's remarkable new book, Mr. Muhammad Survives Iraq: Long Road to Freedom, offers unprecedented insight into the heart of this pivotal Middle Eastern country and the brutal dictatorship that has ruled it with an iron fist.

Growing up in Iraq, Taha Muhammad worked diligently to become an honor student and ultimately a high school math teacher, in hopes of devoting his life to the children of his beloved country. Unfortunately, Taha Muhammad was not afforded such a pleasant, easy life. The harsh rule of Saddam Hussein and the ill-treatment of Kurds such as Muhammad eventually became so unbearable that he and his family risked everything and fled the country. Escaping to refugee camps in Turkey, the family found no respite, but rather endless discrimination, personal torture, and an ever-present threat of death.

After withstanding much suffering, Muhammad and his family finally came upon a U.S. military base in Iraq and were able to find asylum as refugees in the United States. Once in the United States, Muhammad’s suffering did not disappear completely; at times, he continued to face racial discrimination and further hardship. However, in America he did begin to feel the inner peace he had long forgotten in his homeland, and when asked to help the U.S. military rebuild the war-torn Iraq, Muhammad found he could not turn his back on his motherland and willingly volunteered his services to help.

This unique story reveals not only the recent history of Iraq through the eyes of an intelligent and observant native, but also the experiences of an individual trying to rebuild his life in a new country that played a part in devastating his old one. Providing a fresh perspective on the current political and cultural unrest in the Middle East, the book also speaks to the future of the region and all other countries with an interest there, as affected by the turmoil of today.
