The New Era of World Music
Music + Reviews
Written by Teng Acheampong
‘The House that Funk Built in Africa’ from Afroganic is more than just world music it is an album full of ripe flavours, sun-kissed sounds and strictly no artificial additives, that is uplifting and full of energy is now available for download at www.afroganic.com. Every once in a while a musical movement comes along that is so deep and pure that it touches the listener. Afroganic is a natural, unprocessed sound of African music with no artificial synthesizer and a formulaic sound normally associated with house music.

Still A Cause For Optimism?
Politics + Religion
Written by Hassan Choudhury
By all accounts it has been a tough year for the Muslim community but spare a thought for Muslim students who make up an estimated ninety thousand out of just over five million students in the UK. They will not only pave the way for the next generation of students they will also form the next generation of doctors, engineers, teachers, fathers, mothers and future leaders in our community. They represent our future and for this and many other reasons they inevitably shoulder the hopes of the Ummah. However in the aftermath of the 2005 London bombings they bore the brunt of increasing pressure. Government ministers, academics, think tanks and the national press have all contributed to ensure that this unique segment of the Islamic community has been pushed back on the defensive. With the end of March marking the annual National Union of Students (NUS) Conference and with it the end of student electioneering for the year, it seems there is no better time to assess and evaluate the progress and prospects for Muslim students in the UK and if, indeed, there is any room for optimism.

Lessons Still Not Learned
Politics + Religion
Written by Jim Freeman

The common thinking (at least in this country) is that Hezbollah and Hamas are dedicated to the destruction of Israel and that al Queda is obsessed with the demise of America. Both surmisings are wrong and, because they are wrong, America is likely to find itself in an unending as well as an unwinnable conflict against terrorism within the Muslim world.

It Takes One to Know One

Written by Sarah Bowen Gallery

It Takes One to Know One

Sarah Bowen Gallery opens the fall season with an exhibit of photographs and projections titled “It Takes One to Know One” by Manitowoc, Wisconsin artists John Shimon and Julie Lindemann.  As a collaborative team, their work elegantly captures the flavor of the landscape and the quiet, melancholy realities of American rural and small town life.  Their highly stylized photographs simultaneously evaluate and elevate their subjects as portraits of obscure Midwestern denizens, unnervingly comfortable with their small town identity, are rendered in inappropriately substantial platinum.
