Matthew White, a New York native who has lived in and documented the unique beauty of Louisiana since 2000, and is a contributor to "Beyond Katrina: The Voice of Hurricane Disaster & Recovery," goes beyond the eastern Gulf Coast to recount the devastation of Hurricane Rita pictorially. White's haunting photographs and personal memoir now featured on www.hurricane-katrina.org are a powerful witness to the 2005 storm, which hit Louisiana's southwest coastline three weeks after Hurricane. The area has even drawn interest from the White House. Former President George H. W. Bush will visit Cameron Parish this Wednesday, Dec. 20 to present $2 million to South Cameron Memorial Hospital, which is rebuilding from Hurricane Rita. |

Atlantic Records has set August 29th as the street date for the eagerly anticipated label debut from Latin rap superstar Tego Calderón. Released on Calderón's own Atlantic-distributed Jiggiri Records, the album is already being hailed as a landmark in the Latin hip-hop and reggaetón movement. When Calderón inked a worldwide deal with Atlantic last year, he became the first artist in the Latin hip-hop field to ink a global pact with a major label. [Audio stream for "Los Mate" ] |

On November 15, 2005, Senator Clinton
stood on the Jerusalem side of The Wall and was quoted in
Ha'aretz, expressing support for The Wall because it "is against
terrorists" and "not against the Palestinian people."
Senator Clinton did NOT visit the Little
Town of Bethlehem in Occupied Territory, to see what The Wall has
done to the Bethlehem economy. But I have.
On New Years Eve Day 2005, I visited a
family who had just rebuilt their home in Dasheish, one of three
fifty-eight year old refugee camps in Bethlehem.
The Habib [not real name] family had
rebuilt on the very same spot after the Israeli Defense Force/IDF
blew their former home up without reason and without any
compensation. The usual reason given for home demolitions is for
the building of The Wall, but the Habib residence is deep within
the Dasheish refugee camp, and The Wall is at least three miles
away. Mr. Habib told me that in 2004, the IDF banged on his door
and informed the family that their home would be demolished within
fifteen minutes. The family all got safely out but their home was
but a memory a few moments later. |

Biography of a Drug [Short story by Lucy Kisina]
- I want to be alone, I say. - Loneliness is not the answer.
I open my eyes. Why the absurd assumptions? I didn’t say I want to be lonely. I said I want to be alone. And since when am I looking for an answer?
I get up and walk outside. There is a secret barrier between the indoor and the outdoor world. Even if you only go as far as your own porch, you still feel the absence of walls around you. Loneliness? It’s nothing more than the absence of people.

Is There A Double Standard In The Use of The N Word? "You Bet
There Is"
The n word is humiliating, degrading and offensive for most people
in the United States. It is so controversial indeed that a young
black author wondered if she should print it out in her new book
"Don't Blame Eve: A Guide To Live Your Life, Your Way". She
ultimately did, and the response was startling. As a young black
woman, speaker and author, Jovanka Ciares wonders why the younger
generations of blacks and Hispanics have accepted this word and use
it as part of their vocabulary yet seem to be offended by it when
someone else (especially of another race) says it. |

In due time, I heard through the scuttlebutt word of a most amazing creature. An Indian Goddess. With iridescent beauty holding forth, standing proud, high atop a lush green hilltop in Armuelles. Our destination! And this Goddess’s name was Estrella. Estrella. So this was what it was all about: Estrella. They spoke of her with reverence. Beauty untouchable. Estrella’s light feminine mannerisms captivate. A ray of hope shines from above with the mention of this Goddess. Genuine seven crowned Chiriqui. Her dimensions consummate apparition like karat fixates diamond. Blamless vitality shifts through spectrum. Bizarre shades of night. The earth created for her amusement; water conceived so she might have somewhere to walk. Well formed bare feet, exquisite in their arch. She moves through dreams. And upon them. Every ethereal grace rewards those touched by Estrella. |

Chapter 1 The file containing reports of two recent tiger attacks sat on Sasha’s lap. One from Indonesia and the other from Nepal. The reports were slipped in with his mission plans from the Department of the Environment. As one of only three Rangers in the Russian Far East, he could identify with the rangers in other regions of the world, tracking tigers, trying to protect both the animals and the people with whom they shared the land The cabin was rudimentary at best. A fireplace, a stack of logs belt high, two chairs and a small table. One window. No running water, no electricity and no outhouse. A smile crossed his face as he untied his boots. The lack of amenities did not bother him. He considered himself an outdoorsman. He massaged the instep of first one foot and then the other until the sensation returned. Moving the chair closer to the fire so that his feet were only a few inches from the screen separating the fire from the rest of the cabin, he twisted his neck until it cracked and then rolled his shoulders to loosen his spine. This is what they had taught him years ago when training to be a ranger. “Helps the blood circulate after a long day spent outside in freezing temperatures.” He continued to smile, eyes closed. |
