The War on Truth
The War on Truth   by Amy Goodman

President George W. Bush has long preferred illusion to reality. "See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda," Bush explained of his approach at a public forum in 2005. For Bush, there are no real problems, only political problems. The only crises are when poll numbers fall.

Bush administration officials are obsessed with controlling the flow of information. Their strategy for maintaining their grip on power is simple: Perpetuate fear. We must remain in a state of total war. The implications for democracy are chilling. President Bush has asserted a right to unlimited wartime powers. Thus the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Geneva Conventions, and the very notion of a balance of power have been shredded. The official rhetoric is that we are now in a Long War, led by the president, über alles.

Television - A Drug For The Ages
Columns + Opinions
Written by Chris Campbell
Imagine a world without television? For many people worldwide, and in developing countries, no one owns a television, and the nearest television is likely miles away. Lucky bastards, or unfortunate few? According to the A.C. Neilson company, ninety-nine percent of households in America own a television. I suspect the one percent that doesn't, is by choice. Sixty-six percent of American homes have three or more televisions. Guess I'm a minority here, as we have only one. At least only one working, plugged in television. This next statistic, is the one that really gets me. On average the television is on six hours and forty-seven minutes per day in a household. Wow! That's almost like an entire work day. That's 250 billion hours of television watched annually by Americans. Probably something like 60 billion hours in commercials alone. Just imagine the kind of things that could be accomplished in 250 billion hours? Staggering isn't it? Now, if television is not some form of drug addiction, then I don't know what is.

Faithful with a Few Things
Music + Reviews
Written by Hugh Poland

One Sunday after morning worship, a man in our congregation handed me a prayer letter from his daughter and her family. They were missionaries in Africa, and he wanted as many people as possible to pray for them. "Sure, I’ll lift them up," I said politely, sticking the letter in my Bible, where it remained, pressed between the Old Testament prophets and an old bulletin.

It Takes One to Know One

Sarah Bowen Gallery opens the fall season with an exhibit of photographs and projections titled “It Takes One to Know One” by Manitowoc, Wisconsin artists John Shimon and Julie Lindemann. As a collaborative team, their work elegantly captures the flavor of the landscape and the quiet, melancholy realities of American rural and small town life. Their highly stylized photographs simultaneously evaluate and elevate their subjects as portraits of obscure Midwestern denizens, unnervingly comfortable with their small town identity, are rendered in inappropriately substantial platinum.

a time to escape
Poetry + Prose
Written by Journey Freelance
to escape would be a dream
explore the unexplored,
walk the paths never seen.
many destinations do await,
afraid my curiosity
will lead me to a fool's fate.
to sift my senses
through the properties of nature
spread across this planet,
would produce a bliss needed
sooner and later.
a release from the clutches
so frantic…
more and more disgusted
i panic…

Cut the Macaca about George Allen
Politics + Religion
Written by Terry Mitchell
Virginia Senator George Allen is being challenged for his Senate seat this fall by Democratic nominee, former Navy secretary James Webb. When Allen referred to a Webb campaign worker this summer as "macaca", it set off a media feeding frenzy that Allen has not been able to live down. That's not too surprising, as members of the media live for this kind of thing. They love it when some politician makes a misstep that they can viciously malign. What is surprising is that it actually seems to be costing Allen votes, according to some recent surveys.

Who Is Jimmie Reign?

Who Is Jimmie Reign?

It’s summertime in the Bay. D-boys are on the block in their crisp white – T’s cautiously watching every passing ride. Longhaired youngsta’s shake their dreads to the cities bustling soundtrack as tricked out Buick Regals and Oldsmobile Cutless Supremes smash up and down the street blastin’ the latest hyphy joint. Moments later you hear a sweet but street song broadcasting from the speakers of a purple - painted scraper. The melodic voice and familiar tune capture you. The music ends as the DJ interrupts. The song is entitled “Trying To Be Your Girl.” The muse of the ode that spoke straight to your heart? That answer is a little more complex.

The Adoration of Charity
Angela Costi

She is more than a passing gaze

more than a smile in a room of strangers

more than a substantial donation to a worthy cause

within the folds of her demure gown

she stores her generosity

warm and ripened for various occasions

to champagne toast those zillion zeros.

At night is when she really swells

in pillows flooded with tears

a gush of love to hug and cuddle all sleep.
