Chinweizu, Speaks in Lagos [by Robert Wright]

One of the great fathers of African literature, "Chinweizu", gives a lecture on race that is heard around the world.

One of the few writers brave enough to be edited by Toni Morrison and gifted enough to be praised by the likes of Chinua Achebe and Noam Chomsky...Nigeria's great scholar and one of African literature's founding fathers, the reclusive "Chinweizu", gave a lecture in Lagos that is published today in the inaugural issue of "Proof" magazine.

Created and edited by Sudanese-American novelist Kola Boof, "Proof Magazine" is an online journal billed as a meeting place for "authentic" blacks. Ms. Boof, who is a close friend of the legendary Chinweizu, said of the celebrated writer and ideologue, "We who are African can never allow this man or his work to die. He is one of the very, very few who dares to tell us the truth."

Chinweizu, who has become a recluse in recent years, is the author of several groundbreaking academic masterpieces detailing the history and troubles of Africa, including "The West and the Rest of Us" (which was edited by Toni Morrison), "Decolonising the African Mind" and "Voices from the 20th Century: Griots and TownCriers".

His lecture speaks directly to what he calls a history of "race war" undermining the validity of African people and questions their future as a people.
